Head up?

Was this perched with its head up, and the picture rotated? Possibly Medetera.

Maybe. A very definite probable maybe.

Those straight lines in the photo are the year marks of a redwood fence post or rail, and I'd say it looks more like a redwood post, then a redwood railing, meaning my camera was rotated, as the photo wasn't rotated. Down on knees with one chance at it, I might have shot at any angle.

Check the metadata

If you have a tool to read the "EXIF" metadata from the original file, ask what orientation the camera thought it was in.

Orientation?

In the meta data the only thing that might say something is "Orientation, upper left (1)"

Does that mean anything to you?

1 = normal

If that 1 is in the file out of the camera, before processing with any program, then your camera thought it was in the normal, upright position when it took the picture.

well then

it would have had to have been on the top of a finely grained railing.

I recall having several of these longlegged flies in this area about this time, I know at least one of them was on a post, as I had a crick in my neck for days from leaning over the railing and shooting the back of the post with the fly on it, but the photos before and after this one are of other things, so I obviously only had one chance to get this one.
