Hmmm, no I'm more confused. We have...

Desmia funeralis, Desmia maculalis, Desmia ufeus, or possible a Forster species.

Anyone know what angle I need to photograph to make a conclusive ID. I kept this moth becuse I liked it's colors. I plan on pinning it so I still have it in a box.

Desmia funeralis

My vote is Desmia funeralis. The white spot on the D. maculalis photos that I have seen is much larger. It doesn't look like the MPG photo of D. ufeus either. The Forester moths look very different to me.

I'm going to move this to the guide under D. funeralis for now.

This is a forester moth. Can't remember what species it is though. I know it's not an 8 spotted forester moth because they have yellow tuffs around the thorax and orange ones on the front pair of the legs.

I'd say funeralis too

In Peterson's Eastern Moths book, Covell mentions the "prominent white patch on top of head" for maculalis. I know his book is not comprehensive: are there other Desmias?

how do you tell the difference. It looks to me like a 5159 -- Grape Leaffolder Moth -- Desmia funeralis at M.P.G.
