Dasychira, but which one?
That long tuft on A8 takes us to Wagner pg 447. Wonder if it could be the dorsipennata he describes in the text?

 
It must be D. dorsipennata
D. tephra in Wagner is a southern species, and he says it's look alike, which this is, is northern. He says it feeds on a wide variety of hardwoods, and this one is eating maple.
There's no caterpillar pictures online, but I think you're right. Thanks John and Jane.
