Spider Mimic Fly - Procecidocharoides penelope
McFarland Park, Story County, Iowa, USA

Came to mercury vapor light.

Procecidocharoides penelope --det. G.J. Steck
Moved from Fruit Flies.

Just went on Steck et al's Tephritid Flies of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! Also, great...first photo for bugguide for Iowa for this species. I sure hope no one asks me to pronounce that genus name! :-)

Moved from ID Request.

Wonder if that seems as obvious to other insects
as it does to us. We always get tricked by the thumbnails of these guys. They look for all the world like a Jumping Spider until our brains unravel what we are actually seeing. Great shot!

No matter how much can be explained by evolution and is still at times just unbelievable what nature is capable of!
