Writhing Spider - Schizocosa mccooki

Writhing Spider - Schizocosa mccooki
Caspers Wilderness Park, Orange County, California, USA
June 21, 2006
The poor thing was thrashing around in the dust, as if it had been dipped in something caustic. It seemed very frantic at first, rolling over and sort of spinning. (The tarentella came to mind.) It finally stopped, but didn't seem dead.

Maybe something parasitic got at it? Any other thoughts?

Moved
Moved from Wolf Spiders.

Thanks for the ID, Jeff
Now I see what you're doing with those wolf spiders. Howlin' good idea.

You
are welcome.
Is it possible the spider was accidentally stepped on?

Certainly is.
Even more likely would be mountain bike contact.

Might have been just previously stung by a wasp
that was frightened off by your approach??

That makes a lot of sense
There were wasps in the area. At first, I thought the spider was being attacked by harvesters - also numerous on the trail - but saw none immediately around it. And of course "frightened off by your approach" is one of my hallmarks!
