Larvae of most spp. are scavengers on decaying organic matter. A few are plant feeders.

The family was known as Otitidae for many years, with two subfamilies Ulidiinae and Otitinae. Kameneva & Korneyev (1994) showed that Ulidiidae was used first and therefore has priority. The family is still shown as Otitidae in some references such as
