Hornworm larva? - Hemaris diffinis

Hornworm larva? - Hemaris diffinis
Wichita, Kansas, USA
June 22, 2006
Size: 21mm
I hope someone will know what this is. He found his way to my pantleg. I would like to return him to his correct host plant so he can survive. I don't know exactly where I picked him up, though. Most likely would be from a honeysuckle (Lonicera). I wonder if he's a young Tobacco hornworm? I have tomato plants nearby, but I don't believe I brushed past them. Thanks for your help.

Snowberry clearwing (Hemaris diffinis)?
I believe I just stumbled across the ID for this in my caterpillar guidebook. Do you agree he's Hemaris diffinis? Honeysuckle would be the correct food plant for him, too.

Looks good to me
- yellow leading edge of thorax, black spots encircling spiracles, yellow-based black horn(1) - I think you got it!

Do you know how to tag and move your image to the guide?. If not see Help/Images.

Should I...
...always move my images once they have been identified?

Yes, if you're happy with the ID
- it saves an editor doing it. We transfer most pictures from ID Request to the guide eventually, unless they're blurry or otherwise unidentifiable, in which case they get sent to frass. Right now there's no limit to how many of each species can be in the guide. That may change, in which case someone will have to make judgments, but for now contributors decide for themselves.

The more information you include on your pictures, the more valuable they are for the guide. Size is one field that's often missed but is very helpful to have recorded, as you did here. For lepidoptera, don't forget to check the immature or adult box on your form, so it will show up in all relevant searches.

Yes, please
It isn't mandatory to move your own images but it is very helpful to us editors as we are pretty swamped especially during the busy season. Thank you.

Thanks a lot
I appreciate your prompt reply. The caterpillar is happily mowing the edge of a honeysuckle leaf even as I type this. I'll go to "help" now and learn how to tag and move the image.
