Crane fly?
If it has two complete anal veins it's a crane fly. If it has one it's a mystery.

that was my thought
but I couldn't find anything quite like it in the guide (maybe I didn't look hard enough)

does have two complete anal veins and 12 segments to flagellum. Maybe Limoniidae?

added images of mounted specimen
I now see the v-shaped mesonotal suture, which I couldn't see on the wet specimen.

Male crane fly
of Polymera rogersiana . Here is an image of a species in the same genus from South America. The long and multi-segmented antennae with long hair is one of the features of this genus. New for Bugguide. - Chen

Thanks Chen!
A very striking fly to say the least.
