Large non-stop cranefly - Ctenophora dorsalis - Female
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
June 2, 2006
Size: ~20mm
We found this cranefly moving through the leaf litter, up and down rotting logs -- it just would not stop for its portrait! We're thinking it's Ctenophora dorsalis -- is that correct? What about gender?

Ctenophora (Tanyptera) dorsalis
This is a female (note the long ovipositor). Some workers use the genus Tanyptera for this species. There is a huge color variation between individuals, with some being completely black with yellow antennae while others are this color or even lighter.
