Metepeira spinipes? - Metepeira
Salinas River NWR, Monterey County, California, USA
November 8, 2011
I was with a class, and we wanted to see inside one of the retreats. This one, not occupied by a spider, was carefully cut up most of the side, exposing what turned out to be lenticular egg sacs. Sclerotized spiderlings started to come out near the top when the retreat was removed from the tangle (no easy feat). You can see a couple of them in this photo. The newest egg sac was on the bottom, the next had light pink-salmon-colored eggs, and the next up had transparent spiderlings which also crawled out, with egg remains, so there were at least four egg sacs.
There were a couple of other retreats in different colonies that had some eggs that were yellow, scattered on the outside. Maybe a predator/parasite got in?
