One of the Composite feeding Melanoplus species
I think you only have M. herbaceus and M. complanatipes in that area (I'm not sure if M. pictus is there or not). to be sure you need to have a male (this one is female) and to show some clear views of the top and sides of the end of the abdomen. The females are impossible to be sure about. I don't know if M. herbaceus is ever this color (usually plainer and green or at least greenish), but this one does look "smooth" in coloring like that one. M. complanatipes varies so much individually, that this could easily be one of those, even though it is usually more grizzled or speckled looking. M. pictus often looks exactly like this, and I know it's not too far to the southeast along near the Colorado River. If you find a matching male, we can be sure. In the mean time I'll see if I can find any records for M. pictus from that area.

Thanks
I appreciate your help in an ID. I have also collected Melanoplus yarrowii in the area. I am always on the lookout for more, I will pay special attention to a matching male.
