Unknown bee or fly? - Palpada vinetorum

Unknown bee or fly? - Palpada vinetorum
La Habra, Orange County, California, USA
November 13, 2011
Found this bug in my indoor worm bin which surprised me! It looked like a bee, but the eyes seemed to be too big to be a bee. The hole next to the bug is 1/4", so the bug itself was probably half an inch to 3/4".
