Gelechioid from red oak - Coleotechnites quercivorella

Gelechioid from red oak - Coleotechnites quercivorella
Rattlesnake Knob, Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
November 20, 2011
Size: 6 mm
On 8/31/11 I collected a couple of Quercus rubra leaves with fuzzy cynipid galls--I haven't quite figured out which cynipid yet. I noticed caterpillar frass in the bag some time after that, and yesterday (11/19/11) this moth emerged. As a larva it had skeletonized the tissue between the two leaves; it also seems to have made its cocoon out of fuzz from the gall.

ID by Jean-François Landry, who examined the specimen.
