Black robber fly? - Mydas clavatus

Black robber fly? - Mydas clavatus
Williamson County, Texas, USA
June 24, 2006
Size: ~ 1 inch
This insect is deep black except for an orange-red band (not easily visible when perched, as the dark wings cover it) and the orange or yellow feet. At first, I thought it might be one of the clearwing moths because it hovered rather like one of those, but the wings are folded like a robber fly's wings. I'm guessing it's some kind of robber fly, but...what?

It was flying in the yard this afternoon, and when it perched, it did so low, about a foot or less from the ground.

I'll be adding the other image momentarily.
