This is an example of one of the males seeking nectar by piercing the base of the corolla. (see also nightly gathering place:1)
Not sure as to genus and species.

Seeing this image I'm now pretty confident in the ID (see comments on aggregation image) but with California Melissodes there is certainly room for doubt and I would welcome a critique of this det. from Doug Yanega or anyone else

 
still appear the same as specimens I had det.
as "robustior"

but I now think these are Melissodes communis alopex!
