2nd fly at beach - Poecilognathus unimaculatus
Jensen Beach, Martin County, Florida, USA
June 25, 2006

Poecilognathus looks good, but
Poecilognathus unimaculatus has only been recorded from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Mexico, according to the 2003 World Catalog of Bee Flies by world expert Neil Evenhuis.

Poecilognathus species recorded from Florida are P. punctipennis and P. sulphureus, as Hartmut indicated.

Phthiriinae
came to my mind, since I had looked at these a while ago. A visit to the appropriate pages came up with Poecilognathus unimaculatus. Its probably this or one very closely related. If the yellowish color isn't an artifact of lighting, it may be P. sulphureus. Just a guess based on name and distribution; I have no sp. description. Check with Neal Evenhuis.
