Medford, Taylor County, Wisconsin, USA
November 13, 2011
Size: 1" long by 3/4" wide
Found this cocoon in a juniper shrub in my yard. It was attached to the tips of two twigs about a foot from the ground. At first I thought it was a Polyphemus cocoon but it is too small. Many hardwood trees, hemlocks and balsam surrounding the juniper shrub.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.
Moved tentatively to Saturniidae, to get some other opinions... I've seen some surprisingly small saturniid cocoons, and they may look pretty different when incorporating juniper foliage rather than leaves from broad-leaved trees.

Thanks Charley. Perhaps the caterpillar ate less favorable or unsuitable host plant. I think you are right as that was my first impression. I'll send pictures of the moth next spring so we all know for sure the id.
