The photographer based the ID on its being found in a patch of sensitive fern, but it looks different from mine, which was actually feeding on sensitive fern:

I'm not sure what to say about this. The only sawfly known to feed on sensitive fern is H. dubitatus. If they are different instars, it could be a difference in color between early and late instars. If the first picture is of a larva that was not actually feeding, its possible it came from another plant in the area and just happened to be on the fern. Your picture looks like H. dubitatus. I'm not sure if I've seen larvae of H. dubitatus with the black patch on the head.
