Unknown insect wrestling with earthworm

Unknown insect wrestling with earthworm
Kirkland, King County, Washington, USA
June 25, 2006
Size: 2cm
I found this apparently predatorial insect wrestling with an earthworm in the evening. The insect bit at the earthworm, eventually subduing it. Then it dragged the earthworm underneath ground debris. In this image, the earthworm is visible in the lower left. I'm wondering if this is the immature form of something.

Moved
Moved from Beetles.

It is an immature
of what looks like a ground beetle (Carabidae)

I agree.
I've watched days-old larvae of one species that eats earthworms as an adult go after small earthworms. At 20mm, this one would probably become a good-sized adult.

Thanks!
I looked up ground beetles, and I do see inch-long ones around here. Actually, I had wondered what all those big black beetles were, so thanks for help with two IDs!
