unknown spider - Ummidia - male

unknown spider - Ummidia - Male
Eastern NC, North Carolina, USA
July 23, 2005
I saw this spider crossing my driveway. For size reference, I used this picture of it crossing a piece of pine straw. When confronted it raised its' front legs and showed what looked like fangs.

It's a male, too. It's breed
It's a male, too. It's breeding season here in the South (I'm in Northern Florida myself). In the past couple of days I've now seen a half dozen of these spiders out on the prowl looking for mates. The first one I saw was taking a stroll across my kitchen floor!

Trapdoor Spider
This is a trapdoor spider, specifically a Ummidia spp. trapdoor spider. The things you saw that looked like fangs very well could have been it's fangs. It rears up into a defensive posture to look intimdating (which does work!!) :)

Very nice find and excellent images!

(Sorry to duplicate Hannah's response. We both responded at about the same time, I just slower to hit "post comment"...)

I'm very glad for the confirmation
- I'm still learning the spiders!

Looks like a trapdoor spider
Compare below, and others in the guide.
