Beetle - Tyrtaeus dobsoni
Rotonda West, Charlotte County, Florida, USA
June 11, 2011
Size: 2 mm

Tiny thing with single-segmented club.

Moved
Moved from Tyrtaeus rufus.

pool skimming
Who'da thought so many interesting beetles from pool skimming. Maybe I need to re-evaluate my career and be a pool boy! haha

I once stayed
at an eco-lodge in Bolivia that had a swimming pool. We'd get up at the crack of dawn to beat the pool cleaner to it. Some of the best beetles on the trip came from that pool.

Agreed
Despite the fact that the pool at our rental was enclosed by a screened-in lanai, I found many interesting insects floating in it, many of which I didn't collect otherwise.

Moved tentatively
Moved from Beetles.

man...
if my rule of thumb that whatever stumbles you @ family level has a 95% or higher probability of being a teneb is true, then should be something along these lines:

lol yeah
I was looking at that same one earlier; antennae seemed different though

Tyrtaeus rufus
has been recorded from Florida based on a single collection. It is distinguished from T. dobsoni by the antennal club being composed of 3 fused segments (T. dobsoni has a club of 4 fused segments).

cool...
so, chances are?

thanks Guys
Mike sent me a copy of Hopp and Ivie's paper, and this turns out to be T. dobsoni.

Darn!
.

okay then...
next time use a pool with a larger catch area, and fetch us the rufus :]
