Great Image.
I just wish I could tell you exactly what it is! Adalbert is right, it is in the Sphecidae, subfamily Sphecinae. Possibly 'just' a blue mud dauber in the genus Chalybion, but I'm really unsure.

Thanks much, to both of you! I found about 12 of these in the rain, loosely clustered on a sheltered tree by an abandoned old house. There were some of what I call regular (vertical columns) and then some "chunky" looking mud nests nearby. (great terms, I know!). Thanks again!
