Soldier Fly? - Ptecticus trivittatus

Soldier Fly? - Ptecticus trivittatus
Springfield, Virginia, USA
August 10, 2004
Any help in identifying is appreciated.

Ptecticus trivittatus (Say)
This is Ptecticus trivittatus (Say)

observation
Today (August 15 2005) I observed 4-5 of these furiously whizzing about (competing for territory?) over a particularly large clump of mushrooms which had arisen in our front yard a few days ago. So far as we've been able to ascertain, the mushroom clump is Laetiporus sp., Chicken-of-the-woods. The 'shroom arises every year, two or three times some years, but have only noticed Ptecticus once before, and the previous time was inside our house, not at the fungus.

Soldier fly, yes
Subfamily Sarginae, probably Pteticus but that is for one of the North American viewers to confirm. Searching the bugguide for 'ptecticus' may show you some more pictures.

I concur
I agree with Paul, its a Ptecticus sp.

Thanks for the help.
It certainly resembles some other Ptecticus species on this site, including one I took a while back which I forgot about.
