Beautiful specimens
The ones I've seen up here in Fresno, although beautiful, don't compare.

As usual...enjoyed your lovely, clear, images
But when I first saw this post I thought...this must be
P. granicollis!
I figured your usual Westwood, CA, stomping grounds are within the range of that species, rather than the similar looking subspecies
rubripennis
of
P. ursina
, which occurs way down in southern California.
Then I actually read the location info in your post :-)
So, I'd guess you're right. You can check out the
key and discussion in Saylor's 1940 treatment
for more affirmation here.

Thank you Aaron!
I did check out the key, and would agree that this specimen would be subspecies
rubripennis
of
P. ursina
. Hopefully someday I will find
P. granicollis
up here in this neck of the woods!

This beetle was collected sometime around 1969-1970 from within the costal sage habitat of the area. It has always been a favorite in my older collection.
