Size: 1.5 inches
This looks to me like a blister beetle, but I could not find an exact match on BugGuide. Does anyone know what species this is?

Carabidae, Galerita bicolor
Hi Roger! This is a ground beetle, Galerita bicolor, called "False Bombardier" beetles. See, for example, Lynette's images:



where there is some discussion of keying the (likely) two species in our area. Like the ones I've seen, this appears to be G. bicolor based on the shape of the head and pronotum.

 
Correcting myself, perhaps
Well, I pulled out the actual key (1), and the head shape of yours looks a bit wider at the base than the key shows for G. bicolor. Hmm. This could be G. janus or G. lecontei, perhaps. That's a tough one, but at least we know the genus--Galerita, for sure.
