I've "linked" these two photos, indicating they are of the same specimen.

I haven't run into these up here in NC--I'll have to be on the watch, Brimley (1) noted them from my area.

Thank you very much for the help. These are of the same specimen as you guessed. Do keep a watchful eye out for these, they definitely can't be spotted from across a parking lot.

Hints on finding?
Any ideas on finding these? Do they come to lights? Are the adults found under logs, etc.?

Any ideas appreciated. I do love finding the big stags and scarabs, the "big game" of the coleoptera seeker.

Common at light, but usually only after a good soaking rain - common trigger for many spp.

 
Big Game...
There is nothing like that feeling you get when you spot big beetle from across the parking lot.
