Alopecosa kochi - male

Alopecosa kochi - Male
Panoche Hills Recreation Area, Fresno County, California, USA
December 27, 2011
This adult male wolf spider, Alopecosa kochi (family Lycosidae) was recognized by its large size, stocky legs, broad white central band down the middle of its carapace, and the lack of distinct lateral bands on the margins of its carapace. It was found under a rock in a dry, rocky grassland (2000' elevation) in the Panoche Hills Recreation Area, Fresno Co., CA.

Several others of this species were seen throughout the day.

Nice one R.J. How large was it? My guide says they only get to 9.2 mm.

A. kochi
It's about one cm long (it's still alive and in a terrarium). I know I've collected numerous specimens that were over a cm long so I checked Dondale and Redner's (1979) revision of the genus and they give the size ranges as 6.6 to 11.04mm (M)and 9.0 to 16.0mm (F). This is an incredibly variable spider both in terms of its overall pattern and size. In this case, by large, I meant larger than most of the Pardosa I so frequently see.

Thank you and cheers!
