Flea 2 of 2, lateral

Flea 2 of 2, lateral
Sandia Mountains, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, USA
September 25, 2011
Size: 1.50 mm
Download high resolution image here.

I collected this flea along with another of a different species:

on Tree Spring Trl. 147, 8500 ft, Sandia Crest 7.5’ quadrangle in the Sandia Mountains, Bernalillo Co, NM from a Berlese funnel loaded with forest floor detritus collected from under and around a rotting log in a conifer forest. I did not notice a burrow, nest, or midden to suggest its host.

I know little of fleas, but I would guess its family to be Ceratophyllidae.

This image is from a CombineZP processed stack of 145 images with a 5.6 micron step taken with a Nikon CFI60 10X 0.25NA microscope objective + Nikon 200 mm F4 telephoto camera lens + Nikon D300 camera (magnification 10X; technique described here).
