Spider - Selenops submaculosus

Spider - Selenops submaculosus
Wellington, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
December 24, 2011
Size: 2-2.5 inches across
This was taken at around 7pm in the evening- clear and warm around 78 degrees. There is a canal behind the house and a couple live oak trees around the house. The spider was located under the eaves of the house above the garage door. My girlfriend claims that these spiders are common around her house, that they live in the trees, and when her cat was bitten by one it almost died. She said that the skin around the bite became necrotic and the vet treatment was very expensive. It took months months before the cat recovered. She is also under the impression that the spider laid eggs in the wound. Is that even possible?

These are not considered dangerous spiders. Unless your neighbor saw the spider bite her cat I doubt that's even what happened. Many people blame unknown wounds on spiders.

The story sounds even less plausible when you add the egg sac part. Spiders lay eggs where they will be safe.... on a cat would be extremely unlikely.

Hmm..
It appears to be one of the Giant Crab Spiders (Sparassidae). Any wound can become infected or experience allergic reactions. And no, spiders will not lay eggs in a wound, or on any living thing.

Wait for an expert opinion on this species.
