January Insect Life - Vespula pensylvanica - female

January Insect Life - Vespula pensylvanica - Female
Rice, Stevens County, Washington, USA
January 6, 2012
It's been a fairly mild winter so far here in NE Washington, but it's still a surprise to see any insect life in January. This guy started buzzing around my husband's radio room, so we think he came in with the firewood. He had warmed up and was active enough to make me apprehensive during a macro photo shoot.

Vespula pensylvanica
This queen probably came in with the firewood (a common overwintering spot), as you suggested
