Grasshopper - Melanoplus frigidus - male

Grasshopper - Melanoplus frigidus - Male
Ivvavik National Park, Yukon Territory, Canada
July 5, 2011
One of the several species of grasshoppers found in northern Yukon.

This remains tentative,
but I'm fairly confident it is correct, and he'll be easier to find here. When (if) we get matching adults, it will make things more certain.

Moved from Melanoplus.

I was looking at this and lost it - it moved,
anyway, he is a last instar male nymph of something in genus Melanoplus. The best fit seems to be M. frigidus, which he looks just like. However, the wing pads are very large for a short-winged species. Another candidate might be M. kennicotti, but published photos of nymphs (all taken was further south in the lower 48) look very different. He doesn't look like any of the other (few) candidates to me. There are many photos of M. frigidus published on the internet, but they are all taken in Eurasia, and one difference is position of the grooves on the pronotum. It would be interesting to see more photos if you have them. M. frigidus occurs so far north and so far from most people, that it doesn't get seen very much in North America, nor do any other species from up there. Perhaps some of the individuals of M. frigidus there have longer wings??

It's also possible (likely in fact) that there are still unnamed species there.
