Tipulid larvae
Also called a "leather jacket", these are the larvae of craneflies. The larvae feed on plant roots (mostly grass, to my knowledge).


 
Looks different
Looks quite different than the "Leather Jacket". That crane fly larvae looks more like a worm an doesn't have distinct segments to its body like the photo that I posted.

This isn't a tipulid.
You see the two posterior spiracles that are fused together? Those two little tubes sticking out there? That doesn't happen in Tipulidae, but does occur in Syrphidae, which is what this is.
