About 1cm long;on my arm(with DEET);bit like a deerfly;I don't think it's a syrphid, but some type of deerfly; facial markings are unusual. ID ass Chrysops calvus

The area behind the vertex clearly seems to be shiny, so this deer fly is certainly Chrysops calvus

almost identical species, not separable by your 2 images. I will put them on the calvus page even though there is a 50% probability that it is niger
