A strange beetle? - Leptoglossus occidentalis

A strange beetle? - Leptoglossus occidentalis
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
April 22, 2004
This was a beautiful colored beetle about 3/4 inch long. Had time for a few pics and then it took off.

Stinky Bug
This looks identical to the bugs we have here in Montana. We have droves of these in the fall - they sound lika a blackhawk helicopter when they do a fly-by over your head. MAN DO THEY STINK! We are surrounded by pine trees and we always thought these were pine bettles. We also noticed a strange behavior in the way they prepare for winter - if im not mistaken these guys build mud like casings hard as concrete almost - and they will litterally fill little holes with their "stuff" like the end of a compressor hose/etc. This is an EXCELLENT pic BTW.

Squishing them
We have tons of these bugs in our house in Vermont too, and when i smush them, they smell so weird! Does anybody know how come they smell so pungent after being squished? It's kinda cool.

leaf-footed bug
This looks like a leaf-footed bug, family Coreide. So no beetle, I'm afraid.

Western conifer seed bug
Paul is correct, this is a coreid bug, Leptoglossus occidentalis. You should be able to find plenty of them on young pine cones.

Bug ID
Thank you Paul. I looked bugs up and find it looks like the Squash Bug. So thats the name I will put to it. Thanks again.
