Another "rockhopper" - Melanoplus - Male
Marias Pass, Glacier County, Montana, USA
August 15, 2010
Here is a short wing grasshopper (possible Melanoplinae?) that was hiking across rocks near the monuments at Marias Pass (where US highway 2 crosses the continental divide). The attached photographs were taken by my granddaughter Hannah.

Moved
Moved from Melanoplus.

This one is a nymph of one of the Melanoplus species
that will have fully developed wings when mature. It is a nearly mature male. I think I will be able to identify the species, but am going to stick it under the genus until I can look at it more closely. If you have a photo that shows the end of the abdomen in better focus, it will help. The shape of the various plates and appendages are nearly the same on last instar males as on adults, and it's usually possible to figure out whichs species they are are.
