Size: approximately 1/2"
Photographed on a log at the edge of a small sandpit lake. It appears to have horns protruding from its eyes. Any help with ID appreciated.

Robberfly
Hi Loren!

This looks to me like a robberfly, family Asilidae. Browsing through images of those, it seems like a very close match to
Lampria bicolor. I will e-mail Herschel Raney and ask him to check this photo out and voice his expertise.

Lampria
Never seen one on a tree trunk but that appears to be Lampria bicolor.
