The pattern of this one is a bit unusual. I wonder whether it could be one of the species not in the guide.

Can you explain what about the pattern looks unusual to you? (I know sometimes these things are difficult to put into words.) What other species do you think it might be? Can you recommend any good books on flies? My only resources for flies right now are some general insect books and Bugguide. Thanks!

I asked Dr. Thompson about this and a few others. The good thing is that he identified correctly several, including one that has to be moved to a different species:
