Sawfly? Maybe? - Dielis dorsata - female

Sawfly? Maybe? - Dielis dorsata - Female
Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
February 15, 2012
Size: 3/4-1 in.
Large (maybe an inch long) bee-like insect. Didn't stick around long enough for me to get more images. Maybe something in Sphecodes?

Campsomeris dorsata
Did you see any more of these?? There are no published records of C. dorsata from Florida, although it does occur throughout most of the West Indies.

Moved from Scoliid Wasps.

This was the only one...so far
I only noticed this one for the first time today. I'll keep my eyes peeled, though. We have an infestation of flower scarab beetles (Euphoria sepulcralis), which I understand is the scoliid's best friend, so perhaps there will be more soon.

Scoliid, got it!
Thanks for the link; I don't think my image has enough to get me through the key to species, but at least you got me to the ballpark! Thanks!

not a male
I believe this is a female, although it is hard to tell without a close up of the antenna. If you look at the first photograph on this genus you will see a male. Note the males are relatively hairless when compared to the females.

Thanks for the advice!
I appreciate the advice on sexing these little guys. When you refer to the first image in this genus, is this C. dorsata image the one you're talking about?
Or this C. plumipes one?
