HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SUCH A THING? - Araneus iviei
Orange County, New York, USA
August 24, 2004
I FOUND THIS SPIDER RESIDING IN A PEPPER PLANT BUSH IN THE GARDEN. IT HAS MADE A CONE SHAPED TENT FROM A DEAD LEAF OF ANOTHER PLANT. THE TENT IS STRUNG UPSIDE DOWN FROM A WEB. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SPIDER IN MY LIFE. DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHAT IT IS?

Not A. diadematus
This is not the cross spider, but it could be a variation of the marbled spider, A. marmoreus. I've seen various individuals I would have sworn were different species:-)

Araneus sp.
This is definitely an orb weaver in the genus Araneus. Individual specimens vary radically in color and pattern, making it next to impossible to ID them from photos. I'll keep looking....

Seen it

But I never was able to identify it.
