It is a Tiger Swallowtail,
and looks like probably an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail to me (Papilio glaucus. I don't know if you have Canadian Tigers in Carbon County (it's not unlikely), but I think the chrysalis is usually a little smoother looking in that species.

I'm guessing a little bigger than an inch (maybe an inch and a half or so) unless your hand is very small?

Definitely swallowtail. Most likely Black Swallowtail - Papilio polyxenes asterius
