large wasp - Stizoides renicinctus

large wasp - Stizoides renicinctus
near Hallelulah Junction, Lassen County, California, USA
June 25, 2006
There were a number of these on yellow buckwheat around a quarry.

Thanks again John
I wish I got a better picture, but these wasps kept moving, and the breeze didn't help either.

Stizoides renicinctus
good find

Don't ask me:-)
I don't have a clue. Thought initially it was a pompilid (spider wasp), but it is not. That leaves Sphecidae, but I have no idea even what subfamily it would go into.

moving to the Sphecid page
There were some Sphex pennsylvanica around with these guys, and this one was just a little smaller.
Thanks Eric:-{

Is it
mating?

It's just nectaring
That's an ornate checkered beetle under her.
