Found this large caterpillar eating sage. Saw another one eating sulphur buckwheat.

Thanks Tom. You are right this is a buck moth. I also saw some weeks later on and eating sulphur buckwheat.

I just checked all the buckmoths in the U.S. here, and only the Hera fit the distribution map, and the host plant. Here's the page for Hera Buckmoth.

I'm glad you did some research on this one. These caterpillars are quite variable, but the stripe-like markings on this one are quite different from those on any image I have seen from H. lucina.
