Robber fly - Mydas clavatus

Robber fly - Mydas clavatus
Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
June 28, 2006
Size: 3 cm
Very different behavior. Flies in. Perches near me and stares. Sometimes seems to stalk me when I'm weeding. Sits calmly without fidgiting.

Looks more like something such as
Mydas clavatus - a Mydas Fly, images in the guide here. See what you think while you wait for a fly expert.

Right
on - thanks!
