beetle - Sphenostethus taslei

beetle - Sphenostethus taslei
Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
July 7, 2006
Size: 1 to 1 1/2 inches

Way cool longhorned beetle.
This is a longhorned beetle, Spondylis upiformis. At least I think that is the species. I am positive of the genus. This is a great find, as the beetle is not that common, I believe.

Sphenostethus taslei
S. taslei is one of the few large primarily diurnal long horns - I see them very occasionally flying from 8-20 feet above the ground down woodland trails. Great addition to the guide. Spondylis is much different!

Note: This was until recently Derancistrus taslei
