Cherry Webspinning Sawfly - Neurotoma fasciata Essex, Ontario, Canada July 7, 2006 Size: 20 mm long
Regurgitating red fluid. Studies by Nguyen, Perry, Versprill and Yang at West Carolina Univ. showed fluid had little to no effect on predator ants or stinkbugs. These caterpillars are almost mature and will drop to the ground, pupate and over-winter in the soil. Adults emerge in mid-June. Description of adult is all black, square head, white lateral marks on abdomen at sides only - center is black. I will try to keep a few during the winter.
