Phymata americana? - Phymata americana - male - female

Phymata americana? - Phymata americana - Male Female
Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa, USA
August 27, 2011
Size: ~10mm
I believe that this is a mating pair of Phymata americana. I found a number of them on goldenrod in open fields last summer. At first, I thought they might be P. pennsylvanica, but the more rounded 4th abdominal segment leads me to believe that they are P. americana. This is based on the helpful comments from drswanny I found on a page comparing the two: http://bugguide.net/node/view/575803. Thoughts?

I would agree...
that the female's 4th segment looks more like americana. Still, this ID should not be regarded as conclusive but it's fine for our purposes.
