Beetle? under dead tree bark - Odontotaenius disjunctus

Beetle? under dead tree bark - Odontotaenius disjunctus
University Park, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA
March 10, 2012
Size: about 2 inches long
I knocked a piece of bark off a log, and this insect was in a channel that it appeared to be digging through the wood beneath the bark. The insect climbed out of the channel and walked a few inches to an entrance to a tunnel that went into the log.

I'm curious about the hairy protrusions in front of its lower face, with reddish fur. I thought first that they were eye stalks, but are they some kind of mouth parts?
