Major Male - Phanaeus vindex - Male
Three Lakes Wildernss Wildlife Management Area, Osceola County, Florida, USA
July 3, 2006

The area I was at was loaded with dung beetles. Tumblebug and Rainbow scarabs were plentiful in this Oak woodland/palmetto prairie habitat. This male was found in fresh dung.

Give me you eamil address, perhaps I'll see what I can do to get you a few. Just so you know, the major male photographed here is quite the exception as he was the largest from the 70 or so dung beetles collected over the summer. Most males were only half his horn size. Nevertheless, they all are fantastic colors and so fun to watch. Raising them incaptivity proved to be futile. Females did not lay egg for some reason.

These are absolutely Gorgeous!
Great images!

Thanks so much!
I collected a few of these scarabs and am trying to keep them alive and/or raise them in captivity. They have really been fun to watch and photograph.

Raising the scarabs
I would love to know how to raise them as well. They are gorgeous! You are very lucky to find them. Oh, and how long do they live in captivity?
