Buff-colored grasshopper - Melanoplus scudderi

Buff-colored grasshopper - Melanoplus scudderi
McGaheysville, Virginia, USA
August 24, 2004
I know it's a short-horned grasshopper, but it doesn't seem to have the usual chevron leg markings of the others I've seen identified, and it seems to have a lot fewer markings in general. Maybe it was getting ready to molt? Any clues what type this is? It was sitting on the center of a (petal-less) black eyed-susan, by the side of the road.

Moved
Moved from Melanoplus.

Melanoplus scudderi probably
Good bet it's this species. It's an adult female

Melanoplus sp?
Most likely this is a spur-throated grasshopper in the genus Melanoplus, but if it is a nymph, then all bets are off:-) Some Melanoplus species adults have short wings, or short- AND long-winged forms, so it gets messy really quick. Nice composition, though:-)

Thanks so much!
Thanks for your id on the grasshopper. I'm fairly certain it's an adult, so I think you're probably right on.

I just have to say, this site has been *awesome* for helping me id insects for my photography.
