Polyphemus arrival - Antheraea polyphemus - female

Polyphemus arrival - Antheraea polyphemus - Female
Balaban garden, Skokie, Cook County, Illinois, USA
May 29, 2006
She didn't open her wings but we read where she might not do that until after mating occurred and we also read that mating takes place at night. So we moved her out on the back deck to see if she would bring in a male. We stayed up until 11:00pm and took this image outside in the dark. We didn't see any males but she was gone in the morning.

Nice Sequence!
With the size of that abdomen, I would guess she would be heavy. I like that eyeshine which I'm assuming is from your camera. When I go out at night with my head-light. I can zero in on moths on trees by looking for their eyeshine.
